A quick video tutorial on how to add a remote MySQL database to the Plesk control panel. If you are needing extra capacity or better performance, offloading your database operations could be beneficial. In this short video, I walk you through the steps on adding a remote MySQL server to Plesk.
Benefits of an Remote MySQL Server
Improve Plesk Server Performance
One benefit of offloading your databases is that you can improve your server’s performance. By using a dedicated database system, you can isolated disk and RAM intensive database operations from your main Plesk server. The only thing you have to remember is that your applications will now need to connect to the remote system.
Expand Server Capacity
If you are running out of disk space, you may want to see how much room the database is taking up. While there are certainly other ways of adding capacity, you could always add another server and hook it into Plesk. Use the new server as the default so storage needs are distributed between the two systems.
Improved Security
If you put your remote database server on a private network, you can secure it from the public internet. This can further improve security by isolating your database operations. In fact, PCI compliance requires that you isolate certain database operations to servers not directly reachable by the public.
Simple Process
See the video for the full details, but here are the basic steps:
- Login to Plesk and add the database server
- Add grant permissions to the remote database server
- Test by adding a sample database to a domain
That’s it. See the video for full details.
